15mm Sci-fi bonanza. Movie Stars.

As I said in an earlier post, I’ve been re-bitten by the sci-fi bug. And, despite having plenty of miniatures (and terrain) of a futuristic nature in 28mm (and 6mm) I decided to go down the 15mm path instead (part of my rationale justified this by the fact that I had ditched my 28mm fantasy for 15mm so why not sci-fi too). I also blame the likes of Khurasan Miniatures who seem to be at the forefront of a 15mm renaissance at the moment. For me, they do for sci-fi what Demonworld and Splintered Light does for fantasy in 15mm.

Anyway, in a bid to try and master miniature photography (failed) here is a series of posts of recent acquisitions and paint jobs. Curses on all the manufacturers represented here for producing such good stuff.

Mostly Khurasan here. The movie stars; a robotic cop, a red demonoid and an archaeologist dressed for the gym. The liquid robot is from 15mm.co.uk.

Cheap terrain option

I’ve not said much about making terrain before now becuase it’s only something I dabble in. I know guys and seen stuff that far surpasses anything I can (be bothered to) produce.

Anyway, digging around some old boxes (you know the ones, stuffed full of miniatures, models, games and terrain that you promised you’d find a use for some day) I came across this Construction set – Constructo Plastic! It’s so long ago but I think I picked it up at a flea market for 50 pence or something. Looks like it could pre-date Lego.

Arrgh Matey, some Piratical Goodness

Yet another project on the slow burner is a Pirate centred game. I have a stack ready to paint and added a few fantasy elements to make the thing more ‘me’. Also converted a couple of Megablok pirate ships to work with 15mm (or 28mm if needed). More on those later. (I started with two ships that used to be my son’s, gathering dust in the attic – before I’d finished three more were purchased off eBay. No, I never learn).

So I thought it high time I actually painted some of the jolly rogers. For some reason I see the whole thing as a multiplayer game so split my collection in to ‘balanced’ groups of around 8 men each with the intent of painting with a unified, but ‘not in your face’ colour scheme. Go team pirate!

This first crew got dark green and crimson.

For the life of me I’m trying to get my camera to give better field of depth but am failing. I will try and get better at pics. I have set up this ‘stage’ though. Think it works.

No!!! It’s going to be 6mm that kills me…

Long story short – long time ago when I gamed a lot (in Edinburgh at the time) we had loads of fun playing GW Epic 40k. I have loads of the stuff and a good friend at the time ‘gave up the hobby’ (longer story) and gifted me HIS Epic armies. Add to that some stuff picked up 2nd hand I’ve several armies and then some.

They all gathered dust until I started thinking more ‘sci fi’ (see post below). I Googled 6mm Sci Fi Skirmish games and saw that I was not the only nutter around. People do do it!

Why skirmish when you have half a dozen armies? Inclination mainly, plus you can have a skirmish that is tank/machine heavy rather than troop orientated. With 15mm I see 20-30 troops aside with maybe 2-4 vehicles. At 6mm, the number of troops remains the same but the ratio to vehicles can be happily tripled+ for a very different type of game. Plus table size limits allow for a grander setting AND ranges seem more realistic.

Anyway, maybe more on that later. Plus the re-spark of Necromunda-type games, this time in 15mm BUT using original terrain (i.e. your world just got a lot grander and bigger…)

If anyone ever did start reading this blog I have a dozen or so gaming-dilemmas kicking around at the moment I’d like to share and get some ‘gamer’ feedback on. Any volunteers?
