Fantastic Plastic: A Medley of Repaints

As regular visitors to this blog will know I’m not much of a miniatures ‘snob’ and will happily try using ‘cheaper’ alternatives if for no other reason to see if they can be as good as their lead or resin counterparts when it comes to miniatures.

How Big is your God? Miniature scale in “Of Gods and Mortals”

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” So they say. Well, the same can be said for scale too! This post and these pics were in the pipe for attention later but I’ve jumped the queue because of a very related post regards scale regards Mortals, Legends and Gods in Andrea Sfiligoi‘s Of Gods and Mortals.

I’ve only played a couple of games so far – one defeat and one catastrophic stuffing – but remain undeterred as at least the first game was fun (the second lasted 10 minutes).

We chose to go down the 15mm route for mortals (no surprise there!). Plenty of choice for foot, chariot, cavalry and the like be they fantasy based or historical. This kind of means Legends could be anywhere from 15mm up to 28mm if you allow for a bit of literary/saga/legend/folklore license. Then Gods, in my minds eye, 28mm and upwards depending upon the God. The more impressive the better.

Not yet used in OGAM, I plan to make use of some of the minis obtained via the High Heavens board game I recently posted about. Various legends ‘off scale’ could include the 20mm Hercules from the Age of Mythology board game sprues of which I picked up a few years ago for useful legendary types from Greek, Norse and Egyptian mythology (happily the same pantheons used in High Heavens).

Fantastic Plastic revisited: Little Gods

Always dabbling in other options for toy soldiers, not least options in plastic which tend to be hit or miss. Here are a few of my latest findings.

First up ‘Hercules’. This first one is effectively a 20mm plastic playing piece from Age of Mythology. I’d painted up a few of the Egyptian themed minis from this set a while back and some other Greek mythos before that.

I’ve also mentioned the High Heavens Kickstarter that I backed (and finally received). I picked one at random to paint up and it was the ‘Hercules’ character (that’s why I chose to paint up 20mm version above at the same time).

As with all plastics of this kind (quite soft compared to most wargaming plastics) removing flash was a real bore and less than 100% effective. Both painted up okay though. Options abound as uses as Demi-God heroic scale minis alongside 15mm mortals.

I’ve more to report on the High Heavens miniatures at a later date (pics of bent over Gods, hot water treatment, de-flashing tantrums, painting options, etc).

In the Sandpit: Playing with scales and mini sources.

I was in one of those moods where I just fancied painting a few random miniatures and testers. I had a few barbarians to do – Copplestone, Splintered Light and TTG I think (the rubbish female – I wondered if paint would resurrect an otherwise underwhelming miniature – it didn’t).

Also pulled off the shelf were some ‘experiments’. A Reaper Bones warrior, a trio of Egyptian undead from the Age of Mythology board game and a demon from some other board game which I forget the name of at the moment (I don’t have that or AoM, figures bought as sprues). Also a repaint of a toy from my son’s more youthful days. I thought it would make an interesting creature. Remain a bit too cartoon like for my tastes though.. Fantastic Plastic: Reaper Bones Beholder

A good while back I picked up some of Reaper’s Bones plastic miniatures – mainly because I was curious as to how good they were for the price. And how they painted up. Below is a Beholder, 28mm. But for me, he’s a proper size 15mm kick-ass monster (forgive the blurry photo).

Conclusion on Reaper Bones?

  • Detail not as crisp as lead/resin.
  • Flash is a real pain to remove
  • Some bendy swords and weapons to correct
  • Paint “fine”
  • Price vs Quality Sacrifice: B-

Fantastic Plastic: Budget does not mean rubbish

Trawling the web sometime back and the possibility of using board game components (meeples) was suggested by Cheap Fantasy Minis!. I took the plunge and ordered a few sprues from Eagle Games for the Age of Mythology board game (which I don’t own but wanted some mythos-busters).

Soapy water, priming and a coat or two of paint and the results are none too bad. The Cyclops below is good, the Medusa casting and pose a bit rough.

At $3 a sprue you get plenty for your dollar. Shipping to the UK was a bit steep so this will be a better option for colonial cousins. I bought one of each race – Greek, Norse and Egyptian. LINK to the Greek Sprue.

Note: These are technically 20mm (HO) scale. Being a mix of mythological monsters and gods means they are just that bit more impressive with 15mm.

I’ll post a few more when I get them done.
