I was struck again more recently with a similar wave of all things ‘Northern’ that struck me when I painted for and penned this earlier post. I can’t fully explain where the notion comes from exactly but on this occasion is was prompted by joining in a new SAGA campaign at the local club.
I didn’t ‘need’ any more troops per sae but is was an excuse to paint up some LotR minis I’d bought off eBay (dirt cheap), a random Wargames Foundry Viking (£1 at Claymore 2016) and a re-paint of one of my oldest miniatures from Citadel.
First up, mounted Theoden from Games Workshop’s Lord of the Rings range.
Next, Theoden again, now having lost his horse and helmet.
Mounted Eomer, also from Games Workshop’s Lord of the Rings range. Because he came from eBay mixed in with loads of other miniatures I am pretty sure this wasn’t his ‘allotted’ mount. And I did do some basic modelling and pinning to get that pose. (He recently saw action as my Frankish Warlord (SAGA) – he personally acquitted himself pretty well but was finally vanquished, along with the game.)
£1 Viking. I do like a rummage in the Bring and Buy. As you can see from the final image, even for 28mm, he is a pretty large chap. (Yes, I can see now my shield damage is a little on the heavy handed side. I’ll fix that.)
Amongst some of my oldest miniatures (30+ years old). Pre-slotta. “True” 25mm. I had been toying with doing a Pagan Rus or Jomsviking SAGA force and whilst ‘diminutive’ he seemed a good ‘look’. So I decided on touching up the paint job and rebasing.
The GW LotR range is “true” 25mm apparently which will explain Theoden’s size next to the WF Viking in the middle (account for Theoden’s tall base). However it makes my ye olde pre-slotta Citadel miniature (albeit crouching) look tiny… Could it in fact be a dwarf?
Lord of the Ring’s fans might want to check out Eowyn in this post, painted during a previous bout of “Northern Wind”. Coincidentally that also entailed revisiting and repainting a very old purchase too… I see an odd pattern…
Disclaimer: Please note, that any talk above of bargains or cheap deals has nothing to do with anything “Northern” or stereotypes associated with the “North”. Likewise, I personally am not ‘tight’ but like a good deal like the next tight fisted Scotsman…
Great work as usual Jimboba.
Love the paint job , especially on the horses.
Wonderful creatures.
Keep it up….

Thanks for the kind feedback Zrunelord. Yes, love horses too. Have to really. Have three that live in the garden…
