The Mortals: 15mm Xyston Ancient Greeks

Forever with a view for fun and colourful settings for a good skirmish game, here are the poor mortals that will inevitably meet their fate against the powers of the Gods or the brutality of legendary mythological beasts. The Greek warriors.

Anyone of a similar generation as I will have fond memories of films like Jason and the Argonauts (Harryhausen’s magic still has it’s charm today) with heroic battles against the likes of Medusa, Cyclops, harpies, Minotaur and skeletons to name but a few.

These chaps below are quite clearly sculpted and posed for ‘armies’. I only wish that more ‘heroic’ or ‘legendary’ style miniatures existed in 15mm for my purposes. Something like these, or these. Ditching 15mm for 28mm would remedy this. But I can’t. Not yet anyway.

As per usual – no idea which system I’m going to end up using (some day). Certainly give Of Gods and Mortals a go and face off against the numerous Norse options I have. But then there’s Open Combat, Song of Blades and Heroes, Pulp Alley and several other systems that would be good for a warband orientated game. And of course, I still await delivery of High Heavens Kickstarter game which will give numerous God options!

Who should be Goldilocks?

Okay, a bit of New Year fun. Started painting up these fabulous miniatures from Khurasan. Talk about bears with attitude! Despite the fact there are four, it struck me that a ‘mercenary/salvage team/squad’ of these would benefit from a female leader perhaps. I couldn’t decide which was best so painted three options. What do you think?

A.) Goldilocks “Rebel Carolee” and the three bears

B.) Goldilocks IMG_0960 - Goldilocks and the three bearsRebel Hunter” and the three bears

C.) Goldilocks “Highlander Urban Fantasy Set 1” and the three bears

Let me know what you think. Just for fun.

UPDATE

Following some great feedback and comments on TMP here are a few additional alternatives to the above options…

Fantastic Plastic: Budget does not mean rubbish

Trawling the web sometime back and the possibility of using board game components (meeples) was suggested by Cheap Fantasy Minis!. I took the plunge and ordered a few sprues from Eagle Games for the Age of Mythology board game (which I don’t own but wanted some mythos-busters).

Soapy water, priming and a coat or two of paint and the results are none too bad. The Cyclops below is good, the Medusa casting and pose a bit rough.

At $3 a sprue you get plenty for your dollar. Shipping to the UK was a bit steep so this will be a better option for colonial cousins. I bought one of each race – Greek, Norse and Egyptian. LINK to the Greek Sprue.

Note: These are technically 20mm (HO) scale. Being a mix of mythological monsters and gods means they are just that bit more impressive with 15mm.

I’ll post a few more when I get them done.

Finally, the centaurs have arrived

As mentioned in a post sometime back, these centaurs have been sitting waiting for attention for quite some time. Finally I got round to painting them up for SoBH or larger affairs (copy of God of Battles from Foundry arrived this morning, currently half price).

They are a mix of Demonworld, Splintered Light and I think a couple of old Ral Partha. Whilst more “heroic” in scale, the Demonword ones hit the mark for me. I have duplicates if anyone wants to trade.

Pics for TMP question about Elk riding barbarians

I wish, I wish, I wish, Mark Copplestone would do more 15mm Fantasy. I’ve already posted some of his Barbarians on foot painted up. Here are a couple of mounted characters. The first not painted yet (or caught in a snow storm), but may help a TMP’er find a suitable mini for his project. The Bear rider is part of the same set.

15mm Amazonian Warband

15mm Amazon Warriors from Armies of Arcana. Another warband painted up for the likes of SOBH skirmish games. These ladies are well sculpted and clean casting – no complaints there – but they do feel a little static on the pose front. If I had the ‘conversion’ bug I’d do something here. But I don’t.
