There’s nothing ‘pretty’ about these guys. Four out of the five found in Critical Mass Games ‘Mercenary Fighters 2‘ pack. Clearly villainous types perfect for space pirates, ravagers or post-apocalypse mutant types.
I say ‘clearly villainous’. Perhaps they are just misunderstood?
In a similar vein to my last post, these fellas are also by PF. Quite obvious by the detailing and style. They are from two different packs available from CP Models – SB1501 Assault bots (one of four shown, centre of first pic) and SB1502 Alien bot (one per pack – I bought two and with a bit of chopping got two pretty good poses).
If the colour scheme doesn’t give it away, I see them as a law enforcement trio, with the SB1501 being the lead officer (or should that be command droid?)
I’m not 100% sure where the lines are drawn between Steampunk, Victorian Science Fiction, Pulp gaming or Science Fiction a la Firefly where the old (Western) meets future technology. And I don’t really care. Except it does mean labelling these miniatures is a bit difficult.
Labels aside, they are a fun group full of character. I’ve a modest queue of similarly themed miniatures which, if I were actively gaming, would all make an appearance in Pulp Alley, In Her Majesties Name, Rogue Planet or even a post-apocalyptic game such as Across the Death Earth.
I really must get that field of depth on the photos sorted!
A small party of Vampire Hunters / Slayers from Blue Moon Manufacturing. A little on the tall side at 18mm but my scale-tolerance levels can see passed that. I’m not a heightist!
Always like a character model that can do double duty – aside from the obvious gothic horror these not-overly-period chaps could appear in ‘vanilla’ fantasy, pulp adventures or even post-apocalyptic scenarios at a pinch. Yeah!
They join this small crew painted a while back.
Highlander Studio’s in the States produce a number of interesting, not-available-elsewhere, miniatures and all to a very high standard. As soon as I spotted these monkey-boys I had to have them.
Not only do they slot in well as proxies for a 2000AD/Mega City One type of game (Judges are here) but they make a great space pirate/rogue group for Space Opera that can go up against their other genetically enhanced earth-based beast – so far painted Felids (cats) from Critical Mass and Bears from Khurasan. In the paint queue are dogs (CrtiMass and Traveller GW) and Rhinos from Khurasan.
They’d also go well as a gang for post-apocalyptic settings where genetic mutations were the norm. An area I’ve been drawn to for a long time but chat on the Fool’s Daily podcast has got my interest kindled again. Bought Across the Dead Earth recently which looks pretty good. (I know there was a reason I built that shanty town terrain…)
Anyone with a passing interest in 15mm Sci Fi miniatures has come across Khurasan Miniatures and more specifically seen the absolutely amazing sculpts by Tom Meier.
I’ve had a go at painting some of these super fine, super detailed character miniatures before with moderate success. See here (Lara Croft lookalike Federal Xenobiologist) and here (bottom 2 images – Teacup Tornado and Villains of the Sepulvedan Control Forces (Jellina and Lily6) ). But these two below – Hero and Resistance Leader – are touted as a couple of the finest examples to be seen. I wish I knew who painted them. I’d pay quite a lot of money for a few lessons!
Absolutely amazing. Yes, and they are 15mm. And we’re not talking oversized 18mm either.
So it is no wonder that my copies sat under-coated for quite some time before I had the gall to try and even come close to the same result.
Well I didn’t. But it was fun. Next Khurasan order will include another set so that I can have another bash. But for your enjoyment, here are my efforts.
