Out with the old, in with the new. Re-painting some classic dwarfs.

I thought this an appropriate post for the New Year on several levels.

I’d dug out a few miniatures from dusty boxes that might serve in games such as Song of Blades or Frostgrave. These two dwarfs were painted around 25 years ago and saw quite a bit of action in their day. I thought they surely deserved a new lease of life and at the same time a bit of an upgrade.

The block colours were okay on the original paint job so this was really just an exercise in ‘tarting up’.

Oldhammer folk will recognise them as Citadel/Games Workshop miniatures.

Mini Update: “Northern” loose ends and a trip down memory lane

Like all in the hobby I remain a Magpie and flit from one project to the next (not necessarily having completed the first!). And some projects will simply know no end – such is my interest in things ‘Northern’. I use the term loosely and apply it such in both historical and fantasy terms. It can include Vikings, Norse Dwarves, Dark Age Saxons or anything with a furry cloak and warm gloves for that matter.

Here are a few ‘larger-scale-than-usual’ little paint jobs I’ve completed. No coherent connection between them except for the ‘Northern’ label described above.

This must be one of my favorite minis at the moment – this is a Rackham Confrontation/Cadwallon “Mercenary Officer” miniature I bought off eBay a while back now painted up. He will probably be a Captain for a Frostgrave warband (if Slaine doesn’t stand in) or a general for my little Saga force (I do not ‘care’ that he is not ‘Frankish’).

Mordhiem Witch Hunters come to Frostgrave

I’ve mentioned before the ‘plan’ to do more gaming which means, in some cases, dropping my 15mm mantle and giving over to the prevailing 28mm scale.

Games like Frostgrave are part of that plan so when I unearthed a box of GW Witch Hunters for Mordhiem I saw a pretty ‘cool’ core for a themed posse.

Here they are, completed.

This first one I painted up earlier in the year (flexing my 28mm painting). The rest in one go more recently.

This is probably my favourite of the bunch – love the face on this sculpt.

Scale Adventures: Mix and Matching scales (again)

Never one to be happy being force fed ‘miniature lines’ and ‘must use’ scales or particular models, I do like to experiment a little.

For example, here we have some rather excellent 10mm Hobbits from Copplestone Castings. The detail and character captured at this scale is amazing.

Now, you’d think 10mm Hobbits next to other scales would be ridiculous. Hobbits are already tiny. Well, perspective is all in the eye of the beholder. Continue reading Scale Adventures: Mix and Matching scales (again)

Carronade stash: Filling up the Warchest

Had a great time this weekend at Carronade – Falkirk’s premier wargames show – and met up with old and new friends and made a few new ones.

I don’t recall ever posting about my ‘purchase’ stash before – it’s not something I feel strongly about – but I do enjoy reading other folks reports. So I thought I’d give it a bash as I picked up quite a mix of things.

First up – New items (i.e. not bargains).

I clocked the availability of these Time Bandit miniatures a while back. Sculpt-wise they are fantastic. They are a little ‘large’ compared to 28mm dwarves but, well, so what. £17, the second biggest spend of the day.

I thought I’d try enhancing my bases a little and at the same time pick up some ‘flowers’ for the public park in my little fantasy town.

Classic Bug Hunt infested with Khurasan 15mm

I mentioned in passing in a previous post that I was planning on trying out using the game tiles from the GW Space Hulk game with 15mm alternatives. Similarly a host of Bugs from Khurasan.

The table I normally set such things up on was clear for once so I thought now’s the time. Here are the Khurasan Bugs.Khurasan 15mm Bug Hunt Aliens and Colonial Marines I’d bought a few packs of these a while ago. Then last year I made a rather rash (for me) “blind” purchase at 2015 Claymore of a rather large plastic storage container stuffed with, well,  stuff. When I say “blind” it wasn’t totally blind as a cursory glance showed ample goodies inside to satisfy the £20 asking price. I’d list the contents but you’d just cry at the bargain.
