Barbarians and Empire: 15mm Demonworld reinforcements arrive

I remain a big fan of the Demonworld 15/18mm range of fantasy miniatures (and still have a few kilos to paint up) available from Ral Partha Europe. Since they started selling individual models I have been plugging a few gaps in my collection. In the future I’ll be supporting my gaming friend Sam at 15mm Skirmish Supplies who shares my passion for a) Demonworld b) 15mm scale c) skirmish level games in 15mm where duplicates are not desired. He has launched a store selling skirmish packs from a range of manufacturers including Demonworld. Kudos.

Below is a mix of barbarian and Empire types I finished not too long ago. In both cases these are reinforcements for existing warbands already profiled somewhere else on this blog.

An awfully beastly mob from Demonworld

Linking on from my last post on one of may favourite 15mm fantasy ranges (Demonworld from Ral Partha Europe) here is a large warband of Beastmen. After the barbarian/celtic themed minis they produce I think these are some of my favourite sculpts from the range – loads of detail, character and pose options.

This band is partly composed from the Blighthaven skirmish pack and a number other singles from the ‘humanoid’ size beastmen. Quite a few ‘larger’ beastmen to follow (some day).

High Flying Dwarfs: 15mm Squadron from Demonworld

Sticking with the 15mm Dwarf theme, here are a few flyers from Ral Partha Europe who produce the rather excellent 15mm Demonworld range which, as any reader here will know, I am a massive fan of.

The gyro-copter is NOT a Demonworld mini and one that I’ve had for decades (as are the Demonworld models, I just never got around to painting them till recently). The copter is a 10mm figure from Pendraken but very much on the large size and scales very well with 15mm (indeed, the bulk of the rank and file for one of my dwarf armies are all Pendraken – not featured on this blog as they pre-date stuff here by about 20 years!).

I invested in these flyers back when I thought I might try Warhammer Fantasy/KoW/Warmaster in 15mm but never did (yet). Probably too specialist for a skirmish orientated game but I felt the need to paint them anyways.

More 15mm Dwarfs (or Dwarves) and Transfers (or Decals) on Banners (and Shields)

Okay, maybe plenty of orcs and elves now that I come to think about it. That aside, I’m posting these vertically challenged fellows to show off, once again, the superb dwarfs that can be had from Ral Partha Europe and their Demonworld  range. (I note that they are pluralising Dwarf in to Dwarves rather than Dwarfs. I believe the former is Tolken’s doing and the latter is ‘correct’ if you asked the Queen. I’ll flip and flop between them because you’ll all know what I’m talking about anyway.)

Another reason for this post was to show some rather promising results from home-made, home-printed, decals (transfers in the Queen’s language). This particular batch of dwar-ves-fs contained no less than 4 banners so I thought it worth the effort (which was much and nowhere near what it would of taken to freehand these – if I could!).

Scale Comparison: 10mm Ogres from Black Gate as 15mm Brutes

I’m sure everyone likes it when a hunch, a calculated guess or even a gut reaction, turns out to be what you had thought. Such is the case from the new 10mm Ogres from Black Gate Miniatures currently running on Kickstarter with only a few days left.

Anyone who have seen the 10mm Ogres from Games Workshop for Warmaster will see how these fellas would make for an excellent addition to such a force. However, that’s not my main interest. Mine is from the 15mm perspective. I’ve even posted regards said miniatures before and their suitability as ‘uglies’ or thug types in a 15mm environment (though at the time I did not make any scale comparison shots to prove the point, duh).

My gut told me these were the same. After sending a couple of question to Black Gate regards scale Barry offered to send me a few early test casts to prove/illustrate the usefulness of these particular models with other 15mm miniatures on the market today. They have arrived, and I can happily say that I WAS RIGHT! (That feels quite good).

As a small return for a few free minis, I thought I’d post a few comparative scale shots with other manufactures in the market so that you lot can see for yourself.

First off, the casts sent to me, by themselves, tacked to washers that I normally use on 15s so that their height is adjusted accordingly when next to others.

Mini Update: Dragon encounter with an airbrush

I started painting this guy years ago. Stopped. Scratched my head about getting good blending on the wings. Shelved it. Came back to it and tried again. Not working. Then sometime back I went on a days airbrush course and took him with me and played around with that method.

I think the end results are okay. Very heavy on the contrasts and a lot more practice is needed. But he’s done. In a state that he is allowed on a table or display. Just took a long time. Now I just need to find the rider…
