Steampunk in 15mm: Rebel Minis’ Pulp Adventurers

I’m not 100% sure where the lines are drawn between Steampunk, Victorian Science Fiction, Pulp gaming or Science Fiction a la Firefly where the old (Western) meets future technology. And I don’t really care. Except it does mean labelling these miniatures is a bit difficult.

Labels aside, they are a fun group full of character. I’ve a modest queue of similarly themed miniatures which, if I were actively gaming, would all make an appearance in Pulp Alley, In Her Majesties Name, Rogue Planet or even a post-apocalyptic game such as Across the Death Earth.

I really must get that field of depth on the photos sorted!

Super detail paint challenge: Tom Meier’s Khurasan 15mm

Anyone with a passing interest in 15mm Sci Fi miniatures has come across Khurasan Miniatures and more specifically seen the absolutely amazing sculpts by Tom Meier.

I’ve had a go at painting some of these super fine, super detailed character miniatures before with moderate success. See here (Lara Croft lookalike Federal Xenobiologist) and here (bottom 2 images – Teacup Tornado and Villains of the Sepulvedan Control Forces (Jellina and Lily6) ). But these two below – Hero and Resistance Leader – are touted as a couple of the finest examples to be seen. I wish I knew who painted them. I’d pay quite a lot of money for a few lessons!

Absolutely amazing. Yes, and they are 15mm. And we’re not talking oversized 18mm either.

So it is no wonder that my copies sat under-coated for quite some time before I had the gall to try and even come close to the same result.

Well I didn’t. But it was fun. Next Khurasan order will include another set so that I can have another bash. But for your enjoyment, here are my efforts. Khurasan 15mm sci fi half life by Tom Meier
The Hero: I’m ‘okay’ with him. Nowhere near the painted Khurasan example but good for me. Continue reading Super detail paint challenge: Tom Meier’s Khurasan 15mm

Rebel Titan Marines go all Oriental

I think most people will agree that Rebel Miniatures Titan Marines make good “baddies” with their sinister face-masks and Germanesque style helmets. Even the elite troopers are called Stormtroopers.

Inspired by the packaging artwork on some terrain sitting near by at the time, I decided to make my chaps “Samurai” centric. The helmets lend themselves to the look and with the addition of some banners, helmet decorations and gloss for lacquer, hey presto.

Good for sci fi, post apocalypse or weird war 2?

UPDATE: I’ve since become aware of 15mm.co.uk’s Corporate Ashigaru range and Ground Zero Games Japanese Corporate Ashigaru. What to do? Complimentary forces, or rival clans…

Flights of Fantasy: Splintered Light Dungeon Adventurers

A while back I bought in to some of Rebel Minis “Armies” of re-packaged Splintered Light miniatures (Set 1 and Set 2). Clearly, not an army in the traditional sense but certainly a great way to get your hands on virtually all manner of ‘human’ type adventurers you could shake a stick at.

Add to that the range of Dungeon Crawl adventurer packs or Fantasy Gladiator packs  (Heroes of the Arena and Warriors of the Arena) directly from Splintered Light and you will be hard pushed not to be able to cover any dungeon bash requirements (not to mention great stuff for any fantasy skirmish games).

The mix in the Rebel Mini ‘army’ is such that several really nice themed warbands can be created (see below for a couple of them).

Who should be Goldilocks?

Okay, a bit of New Year fun. Started painting up these fabulous miniatures from Khurasan. Talk about bears with attitude! Despite the fact there are four, it struck me that a ‘mercenary/salvage team/squad’ of these would benefit from a female leader perhaps. I couldn’t decide which was best so painted three options. What do you think?

A.) Goldilocks “Rebel Carolee” and the three bears

B.) Goldilocks IMG_0960 - Goldilocks and the three bearsRebel Hunter” and the three bears

C.) Goldilocks “Highlander Urban Fantasy Set 1” and the three bears

Let me know what you think. Just for fun.

Following some great feedback and comments on TMP here are a few additional alternatives to the above options…
