I was looking to try some more ‘challenging’ miniatures and pulled this trio off the painting queue to accommodate. Left and right are Cadwallon miniatures from the defunct Rackham Miniatures and in the middle a grumpy looking fighter type from Red Box Miniatures (Hefty Hamish).
Well these amusing little guys were purchased quite a long time ago now. And they were painted a long time ago too but I have only recently realised I never did take photos or blog about them. Maybe because I wasn’t sure what ‘genre’ they really matched nor how I was ever going to use them in a game setting.
Most of you will be familiar with the Worms video game. A classic in it’s day and I believe still going strong. Well MJ Figures took to the idea of producing a range of Worms loosely based on the franchise and appear to have run with the idea producing some cool, some silly, and some very tongue in cheek variants.
They appealed to my sense of humour so I picked up a few packs that contained enough types that I could possibly use in a Sci Fi or Post Apocalyptic setting. They are billed at 20mm but being what they are, could easily play alongside 15mm or 28mm.
Continue reading Worms in Outer Space – Classic Worms from MJ FiguresYou may well know of my love of 15mm but I still love painting up 28mm too! Especially those from the superb Oathsworn. Recently this has been mostly in the form of their Burrows and Badgers range which is quite excellent. However some time back I managed to score what remained in stock (at the time) of their great Dwarven range (see how I’ve not mentioned the halflings and Sensible Shoes minis I’ve waiting patiently in the wings as well…). Sadly the dwarves are no longer available on their site.
The purchase included these two damsels who wouldn’t look out of place as part of a Frostgrave party. As with all Oathsworn minis, they are full of character and a pleasure to paint.
When I say “Halloween Special” I do think the Zombicide Abominalpha is pretty monstrous and suitably ‘horror’. Likewise the two pistol wielding miniatures look very ‘Van Helsing-like’ to justify the otherwise loose use of the Halloween phrase in the post title.
That aside, these are a ‘random’ collection of miniatures that I decided to paint up – random in the sense that over time there are certain miniatures in your collection that frequently pop in to your mind from time to time, almost asking “Why have you not painted me yet?” These are a few of the lucky few that I actually decided that they had been waiting long enough already.
First up, the Zombicide Abominalpha from Black Plague. In the first picture next to a standard size 28mm from Hasslefree Miniatures.

It was a number of years ago that I first came across Oathsworn Miniatures and have acquired (if not painted) quite a pile of lead from them. Never disappointed with anything I’ve bought from Michael or Jo who also happen to be excellent.
The dwarves and sensible shoes miniatures are fantastic but it is the Burrows and Badgers anthropomorphic miniatures that really attract me to Oathsworn. Whilst I have curbed my purchasing of miniatures in general over the last couple of years it is with great pleasure that I continue to see Michael and Jo’s business go from strength to strength. It has been a while since I painted up any B&B lead in my possession so took the time to pick out a couple more recently – the excellent Landsknecht style Otter and the heavily armoured Marmot. More will follow.

Admittedly it was a while back that I was looking to take part in a Frostgrave tournament at my local club. Other things got in the way but I did begin the process of gathering a warband together for the purpose (half the fun really).
I decided I wanted a Crossbowman (Marksman) in the band. Whilst I had plenty of human types for this purpose I decided to make mine a dwarf – but which one? Rummage, rummage, rummage. I found a recent purchase from Hasslefree Miniatures which was perfect. But I also came across a couple of very old Citadel dwarfs from way back. The paint jobs were not terrible so I decided to touch them up a bit and give them a new opportunity to get on to the tabletop.
So, old or new? Citadel vs Hasslefree?
