Zombicide Black Plague – Base Game Characters painted up

I’ll admit this now – if you ask me for a game of Zombicide Black Plague and expect me to turn up with my set ‘completely painted’ I’m afraid you will be disappointed. Maybe in 2020.

I’ve a couple of sets of the ‘modern’ Zombicide and of those, one set is about 50% completed – bought 2013/14. I posted some pics in this post from last year.

As I said recently I remain well impressed by the quality of the miniatures that come with CMON games. Whilst some are slightly cartoony (which I don’t mind personally) the Black Plague miniatures would easily double-duty for other 28mm fantasy skirmish games. (Coming soon post – the Monty Python and the Holy Grail characters as the basis for a Frostgrave warband). Indeed, I was pleased to see on a recent visit to the Falkirk Wargames Club that both character and zombie models from Black Plague were being happily used for Frostgrave encounters.

Rambling aside, here are the based-set characters that come with Zombicide Black Plague. As you can probably see, I’ve just kept to the colour scheme from the game artwork so that they tie in with the character cards.

Mini Update: Amphibian Multi-tasker from Splintered Light

Just a quick post to show this “20mm” frog warrior from Splintered Light Miniatures Woodland range. (Normal caveat applies regards “20mm” for these fellows as they work well as large creatures in 15mm and almost ‘life-size’ in 28mm).

He’s one of those ‘in-betweener’ paint jobs offering a break from large batch-painting. Plenty more Woodland goodness in the pipeline…

Mini Update: “Northern” loose ends and a trip down memory lane

Like all in the hobby I remain a Magpie and flit from one project to the next (not necessarily having completed the first!). And some projects will simply know no end – such is my interest in things ‘Northern’. I use the term loosely and apply it such in both historical and fantasy terms. It can include Vikings, Norse Dwarves, Dark Age Saxons or anything with a furry cloak and warm gloves for that matter.

Here are a few ‘larger-scale-than-usual’ little paint jobs I’ve completed. No coherent connection between them except for the ‘Northern’ label described above.

This must be one of my favorite minis at the moment – this is a Rackham Confrontation/Cadwallon “Mercenary Officer” miniature I bought off eBay a while back now painted up. He will probably be a Captain for a Frostgrave warband (if Slaine doesn’t stand in) or a general for my little Saga force (I do not ‘care’ that he is not ‘Frankish’).

Gamer Confessions: Those bloody (Kickstarter) buses…

If you back a Kickstarter you hope its going to be fulfilled. Even better when it’s on time. But I wasn’t prepared for them all arriving at the same blinking time! I’m sure their creators have conspired to have delivery of pledges all to fall in the same space of a few weeks.

Here is the confession – what I’ve received in the course of the last few weeks, why I fell for it in the first place and what I thought of the goodies when they arrived.

Scoring
Summary Verdict:
 High is good.
Guilt Burden: Low is good.

Zombicide: Black Plague
First off a real chunk of gaming-goodness arrived – Zombicide Black Plague in it’s entirety (Base game + expansion and add-ons). In short, nigh on two hundred 28mm miniatures (no, I’m not going to count them).
Summary Verdict: Awesome. I was hopeful for good quality (for plastic) miniatures and was suitably pleased. 9/10
Guilt Burden: Massively intimidating number of miniatures to paint – and that’s just the cool player characters and big monsters. 10/10

Dungeon Forge – In my pocket
At the price point, I couldn’t resist this neat little dungeon crawl set of terrain and miniatures from Spain. Very nice in the flesh. Scales great with 15mm. Already painting it up. Considering returning for more dungeon furnishings. Quite a lot of painting to get it game ready.
Summary Verdict: Awesome. Heroquest in miniature. 9/10
Guilt Burden: Quite a lot of painting to get it game ready, but nothing taxing. 6/10

Heroines in Sensible Shoes
Big fan or Oathsworn so had to jump on this one. Great character sculpts for any number of skirmish game systems. I did resist jumping on to the second Kickstarter more recently due to bouts of leadenitus (guilt derived from amassing too much lead miniatures).
Summary Verdict: Always great miniatures from Oathsworn. 10/10
Guilt Burden: Modest number of 12 miniatures – but they demand a ‘good’ paint job. 6/10 Continue reading Gamer Confessions: Those bloody (Kickstarter) buses…

Rackham: Dusted off some warband members

During my hiatus from the hobby I did still flutter around the fringes and attend the occasional wargames show, sometimes with my son (in a rather selfish bid to entice him to the dark side). On one such occasion I allowed him to talk me in to buying  the boxed game from Rackham “Hybrid” which contained a number of very nice models and game tiles.

Years sitting neglected and (almost) forgotten I dug it out as my interest in 28mm grew again. With Mordhiem or Frostgrave in mind I decided to paint up the “Templars of Hod” that came with the set.

After only getting half way through a couple of them (pictures) I’d already jumped on to eBay and made a few additional purchases. Likewise a deal on LAF which I couldn’t ignore. Continue reading Rackham: Dusted off some warband members

Oathsworn Dwarfs: Resist OTT

In addition to having a very large soft spot for Oathsworn’s Burrows and Badgers range of anthropomorphic fantasy woodland creatures, I must also confess to liking both their dwarfs and halflings as well. (As well as their recently funded Kickstarter campaign “Heroines in Sensible Shoes” which has since been followed up with another Kickstarter along the same lines.)

As I now juggle between both 15mm and 28mm on a more regular basis it feels like ‘overall’ progress slows right down (you’d expect a 28mm miniature to take twice as long to paint as a 15mm but in reality – for me – it’s more like 3 times if not more).

Here are a couple of dwarves painted up – several more to follow along with a generous amount of halflings to boot. Show these guys your support for the smaller business by buying here.
