A couple of the character miniatures from Splintered Light’s China Collection. Good 15mm minis for a good cause.

15mm Demonworld Thain barbarians get some serious clout
I remain a big fan of Demonworld 15mm fantasy miniatures – but that doesn’t mean I immediately paint every miniature that I buy. This chap has been waiting in the paint queue for a very very long time. Perhaps nearly 20 years.
Aside from a hiatus from painting at all, I think in part is was a slightly intimidating model to paint and I kept putting it off thinking I couldn’t do it justice (He’s a Gar’ydwedd with Ballista, part of the Warlords of Thain range). Well, a few months ago I went along to Common Ground Games in Stirling where an airbrushing training day had been arranged and I took this beast along as my test model to work on.
For a first effort I am quite please with the results (I should have taken a pic without the howdah on it but, hey). Howdah and crew were painted more recently to finish him off. Now he can join the ranks of the growing horde.

Slaine in miniature – or not so miniature!
I’ve always been a fan of 2000AD. Judge Dredd in particular. But a close second is Slaine, the celtic barbarian hero (link for those not familiar with him).
I mentioned a while back I’d jumped on the 28mm bandwagon and taken advantage of a couple of deals on the run up to Christmas to satisfy my thirst. What better than some 2000AD inspired lead including of course Slaine himself.
I apologise in advance for posting pictures of ‘unpainted’ miniatures but the point of this post is not the painting of miniatures but the scale. I own hundreds if not thousands of 28mm miniatures so know what to expect. But I wasn’t quite ready for Wargames Foundry.
Pictures speak louder than words so, first up Volk the Bastard from Hasslefree Miniatures – as you can see from the photo the spitting image of our hero Slaine. As far as miniatures are concerned quite brilliant. Great pose, sculpting and casting. Scale-wise, just what I would have expected Slaine to be like. Delighted.
Next up, three official iterations of Slaine from Wargames Foundry. Continue reading Slaine in miniature – or not so miniature!
Fantastic Plastic revisited: Little Gods
Always dabbling in other options for toy soldiers, not least options in plastic which tend to be hit or miss. Here are a few of my latest findings.
First up ‘Hercules’. This first one is effectively a 20mm plastic playing piece from Age of Mythology. I’d painted up a few of the Egyptian themed minis from this set a while back and some other Greek mythos before that.
I’ve also mentioned the High Heavens Kickstarter that I backed (and finally received). I picked one at random to paint up and it was the ‘Hercules’ character (that’s why I chose to paint up 20mm version above at the same time).
As with all plastics of this kind (quite soft compared to most wargaming plastics) removing flash was a real bore and less than 100% effective. Both painted up okay though. Options abound as uses as Demi-God heroic scale minis alongside 15mm mortals.
I’ve more to report on the High Heavens miniatures at a later date (pics of bent over Gods, hot water treatment, de-flashing tantrums, painting options, etc).
Multi-scale Zombiesmith Kuld for various genres
Once again, 28mm miniatures, but ideal (if not even better) for 15mm deployment. I’d spotted these fellas a while back but Zombiesmith is yet another US based company and unless I can muster a arge enough order I tend to leave it. Lo and behold some came up on eBay UK at a really good price. Bingo! (To those who wait…)
Needlesstosay, these guys are both cute and horrible at the same time. No doubt exactly as they are meant to be. It doesn’t take a leap of imagination to see how they can be re-purposed for a whole range of genres let alone the 15/28mm flexibility.
I liked the blue used on the Zombiesmith website so I copied that scheme but broke it up a bit with the tan coloured underside and added some tribal markings. What you see below is half the pack, one of each sculpt. Should I paint the other hald I’ll try a different scheme. Continue reading Multi-scale Zombiesmith Kuld for various genres
6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 25mm, 28mm? Torn. And the Collector Syndrome
I’ve dabbled with all popular scales. 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 25mm, 28mm, 32mm. They all have there strengths and weaknesses of which I will not bother to go in to here – there’s plenty of debate on the forums to that effect.
When I threw myself into 15mm as my ‘scale of choice’ I sincerely felt if offered the best of all worlds. I was looking for a ‘single scale’ to do everything from mass battles to skirmishing. And it does – for a through and through gamer. But I’m coming to realise that’s not what I really am. I’m a dabbler. Something of a magpie without any clear plan or agenda. I approach a project with a gamer’s perspective but never really ever fulfil the end ‘gaming’ goal. It merely acts as a motivator rather than a target. Continue reading 6mm, 10mm, 15mm, 25mm, 28mm?
