(Imagination says they are a troop from an earlier – or later – period than depicted in the TV series – so there!)
I also decided to play around with my Silhouette cutter and make a bunch of shields.
You can see from this early test run an attempt to produce one of the Night’s Watch shields that carried their oath (far right). Didn’t work.

So I thought a simple crow image would be more effective. In the process I opted to do a few ‘alternatives’ that, if not useful for these guys, I could use at a later stage.
The planned Photo paper printed shields and auto-cutting of the Silhouette worked out pretty well. One draw back, which was anticipated, was the need to double up the shield thickness by using two shields stuck together. And the need to paint the edges and back.
An unexpected draw back was the effect of white tack on the shield fronts that I used to stick them down while painting the backs. This meant having to paint in the black afterwards again. Bother!
Time for more dwarf-goodness. I love my dwarves, nearly as much as Tim loves his.
This is a bit of a scale comparison though that arose out of the desire to have a full 12-dwarf shooter contingent should I get round to playing Dragon Rampant at any point soon.
I’ve already got an ‘army’ but they are based around some old Pendraken 10mm dwarves which, if you’ve seen them, actually scale pretty well as normal size dwarves in true 15mm (they are about 10-12mm tall). Plenty of shooters there.
However, they do not scale so well with Demonworld or other more generously proportioned dwarves which meant I was short a few shooters. I thought I’d paint up a few of the 20mm dwarves I recently (a year ago) bought from Splintered Light. Terrific miniatures but obviously a bit larger than 15 or even 18mm.
Anyway, here is a rogues gallery and you can be your own judge as to if these fellas can stand alongside their other brethren or not.

At first glance you won’t notice a huge difference. I’ve replaced some of the smaller ‘true 15mm’ resin buildings with more Graffam houses. These ones are a little less ’15mm’ and more HO/OO or even 25mm in a couple of cases. Here’s the logic – by mixing scales a bit you can;
get a certain sense of perspective and irregularity of scale variation across the whole town
create (or undermine) a sense of ‘true scale’ thus making the terrain feasible with multiple scales (you’ll see a couple of shots with 25/28mm minis in there)
using mostly Graffam and paper models, get a better sense of architectural style. Some of the previous building just ‘jarred’ with the dominating theme.

My first and second efforts were not happy – and I appealed to the wider community for some input which I received many a useful comment and link to online tutorials. I did have another run at the sword in particular (and I was sure I’d taken pictures but for the life of me cannot find them right now). It remained “okay” but I didn’t get that “finished!” feeling we all look for when painting something up.
I had Haggis propped in a prime eye-ball position and mulled over what to do for a good number of weeks. Try again or go metal? Well the other day I said enough is enough and went with the latter. I laugh at myself now but within a minute or two of applying the base coat a great sense of relief came over me – “that was more like it!” I thought to myself.
I am not happy with the way that my first (proper) attempt at NMM (Non-Metallic Metals) is turning out so I thought I’d appeal to the wider community to any assistance/pointers/comments to help me move on with this.
This is a very nice model from Oathsworn and I wanted to do it justice (maybe NMM isn’t the way to do that but more on that later).
Stage 1: This is the first run. WIP – Conclusion: Okay.
