I’ve been away on holiday with rather poor internet connectivity so the blog went on the back burner for a bit. Back now with a batch of figures all painted up waiting to get photographed (better than previous efforts I hope). I still have a bit of a backlog which includes these chaps from Micropanzer. I’m not 100% sure on the status of Micropanzer but trading has ceased for the time being and I think I made a big order (with big discount) just before shop shut.
As a result I can’t properly identify which codes or troops these are but they are clearly near-future types sporting fine (red) berets. A Google search would suggest they are SAS troops. Overall I really like Micropanzer models – the only gripe I have is the tendency to re-purpose a lot of body sculpts (and therefore poses and weaponry) across different troop types and forces. Another batch of miniatures that waited a good while before I decided what to do with them colour wise. Great miniatures with dynamic poses that remind me a lot of the Iron Man we see at the beginning of the first Downey movie – ie the prototype made out of scrap.
I’d been reading a bit about various alternative WWIIs and such like and thought I’d go with a German theme. The insignia is a bit of a give away but I quite like the gun colouring which is a nod to the colour scheme I remember painting on German aircraft, specifically a Messerschmitt 109, as a boy. There’s nothing ‘pretty’ about these guys. Four out of the five found in Critical Mass Games ‘Mercenary Fighters 2‘ pack. Clearly villainous types perfect for space pirates, ravagers or post-apocalypse mutant types.
I say ‘clearly villainous’. Perhaps they are just misunderstood?
PF (I don’t know if he’d want me to share his full name) is an extremely talented miniature sculptor from France who has done work for quite a range manufacturers. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’m a big fan. There is a lot to like about his style, both aesthetically and technically.
Highlander Studio’s in the States produce a number of interesting, not-available-elsewhere, miniatures and all to a very high standard. As soon as I spotted these monkey-boys I had to have them.
Not only do they slot in well as proxies for a 2000AD/Mega City One type of game (Judges are here) but they make a great space pirate/rogue group for Space Opera that can go up against their other genetically enhanced earth-based beast – so far painted Felids (cats) from Critical Mass and Bears from Khurasan. In the paint queue are dogs (CrtiMass and Traveller GW) and Rhinos from Khurasan.
They’d also go well as a gang for post-apocalyptic settings where genetic mutations were the norm. An area I’ve been drawn to for a long time but chat on the Fool’s Daily podcast has got my interest kindled again. Bought Across the Dead Earth recently which looks pretty good. (I know there was a reason I built that shanty town terrain…)
The Lazy One’s 3D Printed 15mm Scif Fi Robots via Shapeways
Okay. I have my reservations on this one.
I’m always interested in new ways to do old things. 3d printing is one of those things that is becoming increasing accessible and affordable. Clearly to miniature collectors and gamers it’s a no-brainer that it could open up a world of possibilities.
I’ve occasionally perused the vaults of Shapeways and have been intrigued by the innovation of some folk. I had never really seen anything however that I was prepared to take a punt on until I came across these fellas. (This is the set I bought.)
More of their history can be found here on Lead Adventures forums so I won’t go into that here.
