I’ve resisted buying some a gaming mat/battleboard for a good while. There are very fine specimens available on the market (Pworks and Deepcut spring to mind) but because I am an ‘in-active’ player I couldn’t justify the £30+ price tag on them. Plus, being into both fantasy and sci-fi I know I’d just end up ‘collecting’ a whole bunch. Up until now I’ve trundled along printing out my own boards and tiles and being ‘okay’ with the results. But there is a limit to what you can achieve with an A4 colour inkjet, graphic designer or not.
I’ve been humming and hawing over getting some custom mats printed up for some time. I gathered a few quotes from printers and done a bit of online research. But I faltered. Procrastinated. I simply hadn’t ‘seen’ a finished example so I couldn’t be sure of what I would be getting.
Long story short, I joined Sam and Tim the other week in Falkirk for a rare gaming outing (which was great fun btw chaps). Sam tinkers in similar areas to myself and had had a set of vinyl 2’x2′ mats printed for (Advanced) Song of Blades and Heroes. We played on one and I was suitably impressed by the print quality and material. Sam proffered the printers details (see note 1.) and a printed mat (see below). Back at home I started digging around for various artwork (see note 2.) that I’d been messing around with previously with a view to getting some mats printed myself previously. Described by CP Models as Big Eyed Aliens – which they certainly are – but I’m sure I’ve seen their likes before but can’t quite put my finger on it…
Popular TV aside, these fellas were an impulse buy when shopping at CP Models a while back. I thought, “Okay, they’re 28mm but with monsters and aliens of this ilk, who’s to say they are out of scale with 15mm fellows?” At £6 for all four in the set, well… I couldn’t resist.
If you like painting flesh/skin tones then these are fun. I tried to give them unique head ‘patterns’ which works in the flesh but not so clear in the photos. One of the pics shows them with a Clear Horizon HADES team member. If I were him, I’d not be looking so cool. (More on those particular chaps soon.)
I’d been on a spree painting some of the ‘Oriental’ inspired Sci Fi stuff featured previously so it made sense to spill over in to these pretty cool Ninja from Rebel Minis.
I was just scanning the Media Library and there a few pictures in there to post that didn’t really have enough clout to justify their own dedicated post so I thought I’d do a bit of a random medley just to get them online. Apart from the 15mm there is little theme going on here…
I was in one of those moods where I just fancied painting a few random miniatures and testers. I had a few barbarians to do – Copplestone, Splintered Light and TTG I think (the rubbish female – I wondered if paint would resurrect an otherwise underwhelming miniature – it didn’t).
Also pulled off the shelf were some ‘experiments’. A Reaper Bones warrior, a trio of Egyptian undead from the Age of Mythology board game and a demon from some other board game which I forget the name of at the moment (I don’t have that or AoM, figures bought as sprues). Also a repaint of a toy from my son’s more youthful days. I thought it would make an interesting creature. Remain a bit too cartoon like for my tastes though.. Oddzial Osmy (Oddział Ósmy) produce this range of rather tasty 15mm modern/scifi vampires. I bought a bunch from Assault Publishing during a recent sale and must say I was rather pleased with the miniatures (they are as good in the flesh as they appear in the sales photos).Continue reading 15mm Blood-suckers from Poland→
